Biggles and the Dark Intruder by W. E. Johns was first published in April 1967 as a paperback by Knight Books (a division of Brockhampton Press). Since then there have been at least 10 subsequent editions. This is the first and only Biggles book to first come out as a paperback. Brockhampton Press published some hardback editions in the 1970s but the other editions have all been paperbacks. The book was also included in The Best of Biggles anthology published by Chancellor Press in 1985. Also in 1985, Hodder and Stoughton produced The Secret Night Flyer Game, a board game based on the story.

The events in the book take place around the mid-1960s mainly in Cornwall.

A mysterious aircraft seems to be coming and going with impunity to the Southwest of England. All attempts to intercept and indentify it have been unsuccessful. The authorities are getting worried and the Air Police are under pressure to do something.
