In A Routine Job, Charlie was a drug addict who met Biggles at the Pepe's Place coffee bar. Described as a seedy-looking person of about twenty, Charlie spotted Biggles holding a packet of what he supposed was marijuana cigarettes and asked him to spare him one. Charlie told him that his usual supplier, whom he called "Birdie" was late. Without much prompting, Charlie proceeded to tell Biggles all he knew about the drug supply chain. "Birdie" was Charlie's nickname for him because he was always seen in a blue tie with little white birds. Birdie had told him that, in case he did not turn up, it was always safe to ask anyone else wearing the same tie for the cigarettes.
