In Biggles Follows On, Commandant Kubenoff was the Russian commandant of the camp at Kratsen on the Manchurian coast of China. Kratsen was operated by the Communist bloc to hold deserters from the West where they were forced to participate in propaganda broadcasts to the UN troops fighting in the Korean War. Kubenoff was a fairly ineffectual commandant. Wung Ling who performed a recconnaissance for Biggles described Kubenoff as habitually drunk. The guards were haphazardly organized and seemed to spend most of them kicking a football.
