In the Case of the Modern Pirate, the Cygnet was the original name of the ship which John Sebastian Blake and his partner Nicholas Diaz chartered, under false pretenses, for their plan to embark on a career as modern day pirates. Outbound from Britain, the ship called at Lisbon, and then had its named changed to Pauline. Somewhere off the coast of Southwest Africa, flotsam bearing the name "Cygnet" was thrown overboard to fake a shipwreck. The ship subsequently called at Cape Town under its new name.
