In Biggles in the Gobi, Dr Angus McDougall was one of the refugee missionaries whom Biggles was sent to rescue from Western China. A Scotsman, McDougall had hidden in the caves of Nan-hu with 10 other colleagues.
When Nan-hu had been attacked by the troops belonging to Colonel Ma Chang, McDougall had been captured and taken to Tunhwang with 3 other missionaries wh had also been taken. Later, Ma Chang decided to move these prisoners to Ansi. Ginger, assisted by a band of Kirghiz warriors, intercepted the party on the road to Ansi and rescued the missionaries.
At the end of the book, McDougall was among the people safely airlifted out when Biggles arrived at Nan-hu with the Halifax.
