In Biggles Takes It Rough, Duncan was a member of the Neville Norton gang which had set up an illegal whiskey distillery and hideout for criminals on the run on the remote Scottish island of Tola. A Scot, Duncan contributed local ground knowledge to the gang. In particular, he supplied free whiskey to the local population to persuade them to remain silent about what they see or hear about the gang's operations on the island. Duncan was one of the few gang members who could recognise Roderick Macaster, the owner of the island.
