In The Case of the Missing Constable, Edward Small was the village constable of Elmthorpe in Hertfordshire. He had gone missing on his night beat in circumstances which mystified the police. A newspaper, the Daily Courier, had offered a thousand pounds for the discovery of Edward Small and so Gaskin challenged Biggles to attempt a solution. By examining the clues in the grounds of the village rectory, Biggles was able to solve the case and find Small's body, which his murderer had buried in the same grave as the constable's recently deceased mother.
