In Assignment in Arabia, El Kafala was the name of a small province in the hinterland behind Kuwait. In an oasis of the same name (probably the main settlement) was located the palace of the sheikh who was the father of Jerid Beni Menzil. In the story, the sheikh had been murdered by his brother Abu Ibn Menzil. Abu had also kidnapped the sheikh's son Jerid from his school in Britain and kept as a prisoner at El Kafala. Biggles flew to the area with an Arab medical student named Miktel, landing at a small oasis some two to three miles from El Kafala, with the aim of rescuing Jerid. The rescue was aided by a ghrazzu, or raid, by a neighbouring tribe on El Kafala, which created a much needed diversion.
