Ginger met Gretchen when he traveled to Berlin to meet Professor Lowenhardt to tell him that his daughter, Anna was safe in London. The professor was not at home but Ginger managed to persuade the suspicious Gretchen to let him in by showing her Anna's broach. Gretchen told Ginger that the Professor had himself departed for London that same morning. While speaking to Gretchen, Ginger noticed a letter addressed to the Professor bearing an English stamp which Gretchen said had only just arrived. Believing that this might have an important bearing on their case and because lives were at stake, Ginger succeeded in convincing Gretchen to let him have it.
