The location of 266 Squadron during most of the time Biggles was with the unit. Maranique is most likely a fictional place but there are clues to its position from various references in the Biggles stories.

References to the location of Maranique[]

  • According to Mahoney, it is "seven or eight miles further on" from 169 Squadron at St. Peille, which is "to the north" of St. Omer. (Biggles' First Flight)
  • Near to the actual town of Cassel (Biggles' Borrowed Plumes)
  • Most likely on a bearing northwest but a great distance from Neufchatel-sur-Aisne. (see discussion at Biggles Takes the Bait). A course southeast from Maranique in Apr-June 1918 would take one over the large salient in the British lines that was caused by the German Spring Offensive.
