In short story The Love Song, Marcel Brégard was a French designer with the Rhone Aircraft Company. During the early part of the Second World War, he had been working on a special supercharger for radial engines when the Germans invaded France. Marcel took the blueprints with him to avoid them falling into German hands and attempted to leave by air for England. However he found himself trapped in Amiens by a road accident which broke his leg. He sought refuge in the house of a friend, Mademoiselle René, who ran a small tabac. There he met Corporal Price, a British soldier who had been cut off from his unit and who was similarly hiding from the Germans. Price subsequently made it back to England with the information about Marcel's blueprints whereupon Biggles was sent to Amiens on a secret mission to retrieve them.

When Biggles arrived, he was unable to speak to Marcel as he was at supper with four German soldiers who had been billeted in Mademoiselle René's house. René asked Biggles to wait outside by the bedroom window. Some hours later, Marcel threw the packet of blueprints out to Biggles and bid him bon voyage.

In the graphic adaptation of the story in Squadron Biggles, Biggles also had the mission of bringing Marcel back with him if he could. Marcel told Biggles through the window that he could not come with him as he could only walk with difficulty and, in any case, his disappearance from Amiens might bring trouble to René.
