In Biggles Takes a Hand, Margareta Roth was the daughter of Oberst Hans Roth, one time Underminister for Defence of East Germany. When her father was arrested and executed as a pro-Western sympathiser, Margareta escaped with her mother Frau Roth and her brother Moritz into West Berlin. From there they made their way to London and subsequently to the United States.
