Biggles and the Marauder[]

In Biggles Delivers the Goods, a B-26 Marauder transports Air Commodore Raymond and Li Chi to Elephant Island towards the end of the book. Given the Marauder's reputation as a hot and unforgiving aircraft which was difficult to fly, it would seem a strange choice to put down on an improvised runway. Perhaps the Air Commodore was interested in speed, and the Marauder was arguably fast but not much different in speed from a B-24 Liberator.

Nice first drawing of book. This scene at Georgetown Airport shows a B-26 Marauder overhead. No real reason for the plane to be there. One supposes that the artist, Stig Stjernvik, just wanted to have a bit of fun. The Marauder could have been a converted into an executive transport, as indeed some were in real life. But then again, this one appears to be armed.
