In The Case of the Black Gauntlet, Max Peterson was a stunt pilot who acted in a film directed by Group Captain "Wizard" Gainsforth together with German actress Thea Hertz. Peterson performed a number of scenes in the film, including a chariot driving sequence and a ground attack sequence in Messerschmitt Me-109. However he mysteriously failed to turn up on the final day of shooting which was to have been a climactic air battle sequence between himself and Thea Hertz. Biggles, who was acting as technical adviser to the film was persuaded to take his place.
