In The Case of the Modern Pirate, Pauline was the second name adopted by John Sebastian Blake and his partner Nicholas Diaz for the ship which they had chartered, under false pretenses, to embark on a career as modern day pirates. Originally named Cygnet, a shipwreck was faked, the ship repainted and renamed Pauline before calling at Cape Town where its cargo was sold and a new load of cargo taken on board.

Outbound from Cape Town with a fresh load of cargo for South America, the Pauline was renamed Corinthia and set course for Brisbane, Australia.
