In The Case of the Lost Souls, Penthorpe was the name of the village or district in which was situated Downside Cottage, the farm belonging to John Stokes. Nearby, and up the slope of the South Downs from him was a general store run by Lucius Landerville which sold items to passing motorists, including petrol, teas and ices, farm produce. Landerville also ran a kennel which sold puppies and accepted pets for boarding.

Penthorpe is a fictional location and there is very little information about where it is situated other than being in Sussex and on the south facing or dip slope of the South Downs.
