The Place de Jaude is one of the main squares in the city of Clermont-Ferrand. On it are situated the Opera House, tourist office, major banks and shopping malls. Much of the modern day square is still a pedestrian only area as it probably was in Biggles' time. In Biggles Takes Charge, Algy and Charles Zarrill spent the night in a small hotel on the Place de Jaude on their way south from La Sologne to Monte Carlo. Algy had calculated that there would be less chance of them being found by their pursuers in a large city like Clermont-Ferrand. The Place de Jaude, being a busy place by day and night would also give them a measure of safety.
The name of Algy's hotel is not mentioned but there are still, today, small budget hotels of the three star type situated among the buildings on the square.
