In The Adventure of the Luminous Clay, Professor Lovejoy was a naturalist and explorer who had discovered a group of gulls which laid eggs with luminous shells with a bluish tinge. He subsequently read a paper on this topic to the Royal Society. Sir James Randal, a research specialist in atomic energy heard the paper and realised that the phenomenon might have been the result of the gulls ingesting minute quantities of blue clay, an expensive substance vital to research in atomic energy. Randal brought Lovejoy to see Air Commodore Raymond with a request that someone be sent to the remote Pacific islet where the gulls lived in order to retrieve a container of the expensive substance. This resulted in Biggles and co. being despatched on the mission, accompanied by Lovejoy.
