The Supermarine Sea Otter and Biggles[]

Whether the Supermarine Sea Otter is really the same as the Otter amphibian which appears so often in the Biggles's Air Police era stories is a matter of debate. How serious does one take the inconsistency in number of engines? The Supermarine aircraft has only one, whereas in the Sea Otter of the novels has consistently two engines.

When it came to the derivative work, the Sargasso-Mysteriet, the author/artist probably wanted to spare their readers this kind of uncertainty. So they made Biggles really use a Supermarine Sea Otter in his search of the Atlantic for answers to the mystery of the missing ships and aircraft. A full page in the graphic novel is devoted to a 3-view drawing and technical description of the Supermarine Sea Otter. The range of the Sea Otter would have been rather short for the mission envisaged, but then he was operating from an island base and he had a Douglas DC-3 Dakota as a supply plane.
