In The Case of the Missing Constable, Tomkins was an officer from Scotland Yard's fingerprints department which Gaskin had brought to the village of Elmthorpe, Hertfordshire at the request of Biggles. By taking fingerprints from the handle of the sexton's spade and the pulpit in the village church, and comparing them with prints from the scene of a burglary at Clagston Hall, Tomkins was able to verify that the village parson, Dewsberry was the burglar, and also the murderer of the village constable Edward Small.
