The island of Venesos is a fictional island set among the Northern Sporades group of islands east of Greece in the North Aegean Sea. In reality, the Northern Sporades group comprises 24 islands, only the largest 4 of which have permanent inhabitants. Venesos is like some of theses islands, mountainous in nature and large enough to have at least one village with a fishing port and also, some distance away, the ruins of another commercial port used in ancient times. There was an abandoned monastery in the centre of the island where Colonel Nicolinos and his drug gang maintained its base, using the chapel of the monastery as a laboratory to process opium into heroin.
